Overview of Photovoltaic Systems
A Photovoltaic (PV) system harnesses the power of sunlight to supply your home, office or factory with electricity. Photovoltaic systems produce electricity from sunlight through modules that are installed on your roof or elsewhere on your property. PV power doesn’t produce noise or pollution, it’s reliable, dependable and has no moving parts. It’s also renewable, so it's good environment.
The basic building block is the PV cell, which is connected to other cells to create larger units called modules. Modules are connected together to form panels or strings. The desired resulting voltage will determine the number of modules in a string. The number of strings will determine the capacity of your system. The finished panels are also called an array.
Your electricty consumption or budget will determine the size of the array that can be installed. The direction and tilt of your roof will affect the efficiency of the system, but not by much. South facing is best but arrays that face East or West or any direction in between will produce sufficient electricity to make any investment a sensible one.
The DC electricity produced by the array and is either stored in batteries if you have an 'Off-Grid' system or fed via an inverter where it is changed into AC electricity for use in the home, or by your utility company if you have a 'Grid Connencted' System.
With a 'Grid Connencted ' system during daylight hours the electricity the array produces is used to satisfy your electrical needs first. If your system is producing more electricity then you are consuming the extra electricity goes back to the utility company, and your 'meter turns backwards'.
Shade is bad news for PV arrays. If any cell in the PV array is shaded this can dramatically reduce the output of your system.
The PV modules that build up the array can be used as part of the building fabric itself. On new builds, the PV modules that collect solar energy can replace roof tiles or cladding reducing the cost of materials for the project.
A retro-fit installion is also no problem. The PV array can be mounted above roof tiles on sturdy aluminum frames or away from the building entirely on aluminum or steel 'A' frames.
Simple, modern and effective solar power solutions for the '21st solar century'.

Grid Connected PV System
The grid connected PV system is best sized on your budget and available area for the array. The solar energy system is very simple, there is little that can go wrong and normally these systems are very reliable. The system basically consists of PV modules and a grid connected inverter. The modules are usually roof mounted and generate electricity that is either used in the home or sold back to the national grid.

Off Grid PV System
The off grid PV system needs to be sized correctly so the end user doen't run out of power. The system is built from PV modules, a charge controller, PV battery bank and an inverter.
The buildings energy consumption needs to be calculated and a PV array sized to produce enough power to charge the batteries and supply power to the appliances. In addition the battery bank needs to supply enough power when there are periods of little or no sunshine.
An Off-Grid domestic or commercial PV system in the UK would need to have generator back up for the winter months.
Below is a solar system sizing sheet for 'off grid' PV system. You will need to list all the electrical appliances you wish to run, the wattage and how long you will use the appliance per day and per week. When you have finished please email the completed form to us and we design a system for you.

Monocrystalline
Featuring our advanced silicon nitride monocrystalline cell technology, BP Solar's premium monocrystalline product line provides superior energy performance and efficiency. When it is essential to maximize power per square foot or if you are looking for a black module to integrate into an architectural look, our premium monocrystalline products are the modules to choose. Within the range are the sleek black BP EnergyLux™ modules, a 2006 Top 100 Product of Qualified Remodeler Magazine, that match performance with aesthetics, offering the energy savings that solar provides in a way that complements a home's roof, and the laser grooved, buried contact Saturn ™ made with monocrystalline solar cells. Each cell is cut from a single slowly grown crystal, a more expensive process that yields the most efficient solar cells.
